Overview

A stud locater, also known as a stud finder, stud detector, or stud sensor, is a handheld tool used to locate structural framing elements such as studs, beams, or joists hidden behind wall surfaces. These tools are most commonly used on drywall, plasterboard, and similar finished wall systems.

Working Principle

Stud locaters are designed to identify areas of increased density or the presence of metal components behind walls. This allows users to safely drill, fasten, or mount fixtures without damaging hidden structures, wiring, or plumbing.

Types of Stud Locaters

Magnetic Stud Locaters: These devices use strong magnets to detect metal fasteners such as nails or screws that secure drywall or lath to wooden or metal studs. Although metal studs are more common in commercial buildings, magnetic stud locaters also work effectively in wood-frame construction by locating embedded fasteners.

Electronic Stud Locaters: Electronic models detect changes in wall density using sensors. By scanning the wall surface, they can identify the edges or center of studs, providing greater accuracy and ease of use, especially on thicker or multi-layer wall systems.
