Overview

Exhaust and ventilation systems are essential engineering controls used to maintain healthy indoor air quality by removing contaminated air and supplying fresh air into enclosed spaces. These systems play a critical role in residential, commercial, and industrial environments.

Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)

A local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system is designed to reduce exposure to airborne contaminants such as dust, mist, fumes, vapors, and gases directly at their source. By capturing pollutants before they disperse into the workplace or occupied area, LEV systems significantly improve safety and air quality.

In simple terms, exhaust ventilation systems work by extracting polluted air from the environment and discharging it safely outside the building.

Supply Air & Air Circulation

Ventilation systems also ensure the controlled introduction of fresh air into indoor spaces. Supply air is typically admitted through outdoor air registers installed in walls, window frames, or dedicated intake openings.

Self-regulating outdoor air registers may be used to limit airflow during extremely low outdoor temperatures, helping to maintain thermal comfort and energy efficiency.

Airflow Distribution

For effective ventilation, air must be able to circulate freely throughout the building. This is commonly achieved by providing airflow paths through gaps at the bottom or top of doors, transfer grilles, or dedicated ventilation openings.
