Lobe Pump
Lobe pumps are positive displacement pumps designed to handle viscous, abrasive, and sensitive fluids with gentle, consistent flow. Their non-contacting lobes ensure efficient transfer while minimizing shear and product damage.
Overview
A lobe pump, also known as a rotary lobe pump, is a type of positive displacement pump that uses rotating lobes to move fluid through the pump casing. The lobes rotate without touching each other, reducing wear and ensuring smooth operation.
Operating Principle
As the lobes rotate, they unmesh on the inlet side, creating expanding cavities that draw fluid into the pump. The fluid is then trapped between the lobes and the casing and carried around to the discharge side, where the lobes mesh again and force the fluid out.
Main Characteristics
- Positive displacement pumping with steady and uniform flow
- Non-contacting lobes reduce friction and wear
- Low shear handling suitable for sensitive products
- Capable of pumping viscous liquids, pastes, and abrasives
Applications
- Food and beverage processing
- Pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries
- Chemical and petrochemical processing
- Cosmetics and personal care products
- Transfer of viscous and shear-sensitive fluids
