Dowel Bar Disc

Plastic Dowel Bar Discs used at concrete pavement expansion and contraction joints to create the void needed for slab movement and to allow the dowel bar to slide freely as the pavement expands and contracts.
Overview
Dowel Bar Discs are plastic accessories used in concrete pavement construction at expansion and contraction joints. They are installed onto the end of dowel bars to create the void required for normal slab movement and to allow the dowel bar to slide freely as the concrete pavement expands and contracts due to temperature changes, drying shrinkage, and traffic loads.
Function & Purpose
The disc creates a controlled space between the closed end of the joint assembly and the dowel bar inside the concrete slab. This void absorbs longitudinal movement of the slabs, preventing the dowel bar from binding against the surrounding concrete and reducing the risk of joint distress, faulting, and premature pavement failure.
Design Features
- Manufactured from durable, lightweight, corrosion-resistant plastic
- Compressible disc geometry allows controlled joint movement
- Center hole and radial slits provide a snug, secure fit on the dowel bar
- Designed to stay in position during concrete pouring, vibration, and curing
- Available in sizes to suit a wide range of dowel bar diameters
Applications
- Concrete road and highway expansion joints
- Industrial floors, warehouse slabs, and parking areas
- Airport pavements and heavy-duty industrial yards
- Bridge approach slabs and infrastructure projects
- Reinforced concrete pavements requiring positive joint movement
Installation Notes
- Slip the disc fully onto the end of the dowel bar before concrete placement
- Match disc size to the dowel diameter to maintain a tight, watertight assembly
- Use together with Dowel Bar Sleeves for full debonding and slip performance
- Inspect for damage prior to installation to ensure correct fit and function
Operational Benefits
- Allows uninterrupted concrete expansion and contraction
- Prevents binding, cracking, and premature joint failure
- Maintains proper dowel alignment between adjacent slabs
- Cleaner and faster alternative to manual debonding methods
- Reduces long-term pavement maintenance and repair costs
