Air Release Valve
Air release valves are automatic valves designed to discharge accumulated air pockets from pressurized pipeline systems. They improve hydraulic efficiency, protect pipelines from air-related issues, and help prevent water hammer and pressure surges.
Overview
Air release valves are installed on pressurized pipelines to automatically remove trapped air that accumulates at high points. The presence of air pockets can reduce flow efficiency, increase energy losses, and cause damaging pressure fluctuations. Air release valves ensure smooth and reliable pipeline operation.
Working Principle
- Air collects at high points in a full pipeline and enters the valve body
- Accumulated air displaces the liquid inside the valve, causing the float to drop
- The internal lever mechanism multiplies the float force
- The valve orifice opens even under internal pressure to release trapped air
- Once air is expelled and liquid refills the valve, the float rises and the valve closes
Main Functions
- Automatic release of air pockets during pipeline operation
- Admission of air into the pipeline when internal pressure drops below atmospheric pressure
- Protection of pipelines against vacuum conditions
- Reduction of water hammer and pressure surges
Design Features
- Float-operated mechanism for automatic operation
- Lever system enabling opening against full internal pressure
- Compact and robust construction for long service life
- Reliable sealing to prevent leakage during normal operation
Installation
- Installed at the highest points of pressurized pipelines
- Commonly used in water transmission and distribution lines
- Also suitable for irrigation, pumping stations, and industrial piping systems
Benefits
- Improves pipeline efficiency and flow capacity
- Prevents air-related blockages and energy losses
- Protects pipelines and equipment from pressure damage
- Enhances system safety and operational reliability
Applications
- Water supply and distribution networks
- Irrigation systems
