Fabric Expansion Joint

Fabric expansion joints are flexible, low-pressure ducting elements designed to absorb large multi-directional movements, vibration, and thermal expansion in gas and air handling systems. Available in fabric, fiber, and asphalt-based constructions depending on application requirements.

Overview

Fabric expansion joints are very low-pressure flexible connectors typically used in ducting systems. They consist of round or rectangular fabric bellows sections combined with suitable end connections, allowing absorption of large movements in multiple directions.

Design & Construction

  • Flexible fabric or fiber bellows construction
  • Round or rectangular cross-section options
  • Designed for low-pressure applications
  • Capable of absorbing axial, lateral, and angular movements

Types of Expansion Joints

  • Fabric Expansion Joint: Lightweight, flexible, and capable of accommodating large movements in ducting systems.
  • Asphalt Expansion Joint: Composed of asphalt blends, vegetable fibers, and mineral fillers formed under heat and pressure. Waterproof, flexible, permanent, and self-sealing.
  • Fibre Expansion Joint: Versatile, resilient, flexible, and non-extruding under operational movement.

Operating Principle

Fabric expansion joints absorb heat-induced expansion and contraction, vibration, and structural movement. Their flexibility allows systems to move freely without transferring stress to connected equipment or structures.

Applications

  • Low-pressure air and gas ducting systems
  • HVAC and ventilation systems
  • Power plants and industrial exhaust systems
  • Process gas lines and flue gas ducts
  • Building and infrastructure expansion joints

Structural & Construction Use

In construction and infrastructure, expansion joints are used to accommodate movement caused by thermal expansion, contraction, wind-induced sway, seismic activity, and ground settlement. Without expansion joints, structures such as bridges and buildings would crack, buckle, or separate under temperature variations.

Key Advantages

  • Allows large multi-directional movement
  • Excellent vibration and noise absorption
  • Prevents structural stress, cracking, and damage
  • Lightweight and easy to install
  • Cost-effective solution for low-pressure systems
