Pinch Valve
Pinch valves are full-bore control valves that regulate flow by mechanically or pneumatically pinching a flexible elastomer sleeve. They are ideal for handling slurries, abrasive, corrosive, and viscous fluids with minimal pressure loss and excellent shut-off performance.
Overview
A pinch valve is a type of control valve that uses a flexible elastomeric tube or sleeve as the flow control element. Flow is regulated by pinching or squeezing the sleeve, which obstructs or allows the passage of the medium without exposing mechanical components to the process fluid.
Operating Principle
The valve operates by applying mechanical force or pneumatic/hydraulic pressure to compress the flexible sleeve. When the sleeve is pinched closed, flow stops completely; when released, the valve provides a full-bore, unobstructed flow path.
Design Characteristics
- Full bore design with no internal obstructions
- Flexible elastomer sleeve as the only wetted part
- Excellent sealing even with suspended solids
- No contact between process fluid and valve body or actuator
Types of Pinch Valves
- Mechanical Pinch Valves: Operated by screw, lever, or bar mechanisms
- Pneumatic Pinch Valves: Sleeve is compressed using air pressure
- Hydraulic Pinch Valves: Use hydraulic pressure for sleeve actuation
Materials
- Sleeve: Natural rubber, EPDM, Neoprene, Nitrile, Silicone, or other elastomers
- Body: Cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum
Advantages
- Ideal for abrasive, corrosive, and slurry media
- Bubble-tight shut-off
- Minimal pressure drop due to full-bore design
- Low maintenance with simple construction
- No clogging or contamination risk
Limitations
- Operating pressure limited by sleeve material
- Sleeve is a wear part and requires periodic replacement
Applications
- Slurry handling and solid-laden fluids
- Mining and mineral processing
- Wastewater treatment
- Chemical and corrosive fluid handling
- Food and pharmaceutical industries
Key Benefits
- Reliable performance in harsh service conditions
- Extended service life with proper sleeve selection
- Safe operation with zero leakage to the environment
